journal: on 2023
in short, the beginning of the year saw my personal life pick up. by mid-year, i realized it wasn't going as well as i thought. the good things that had come were not as great as they seemed at first. in october, i went back to school in order to improve myself, and for some direction. by the end of december i was just waiting for the new year to start, so i could start my next term in school.
the high points:
- i enrolled in college after a near decade break
- we adopted the sweetest rescue dog, Sophie
- i visited the National Mall in Washington, D.C., saw the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial for the first time
- i visited the National Aquarium in Baltimore for the first time <>br
- i got to celebrate my 3rd anniversary with my husband. without his unwavering support, i simply wouldn't be here.
2023 was a good year for games. (but not so much for the employees who made a lot of the big video games, to be sure.) while i'm still interested in playing Baldur's Gate 3 and Armored Core 6, most of my joy actually came from the tabletop games i discovered:
- Death in Space - the universe is collapsing, and everything is broken and recycled because there is no other option. it's existential dread, the game. plus cosmic and void not-magic.
i've only gotten to run one session, but this is my first experience as a gm and i really enjoy it! it's the only game i've found players for so far. - Koriko: A Magical Year - Kiki's Delivery Service is my absolute favorite Ghibli movie. the moment i learned a game was being made in it's likeness, i knew i wanted to get it! games that use tarot cards are also my jam. this game will be my introduction to solo journaling games.
- Root - yes, like the board game, which i haven't played. it looks adorable and i know people who'd love to play, if we ever find time.
- Scum and Villainy - i actually didn't know much about this when i got it. it has good word of mouth though, and i do love scifi.
- Thirsty Sword Lesbians - the queer joy i felt finding this game is indescribable. it was an instant buy the moment i saw it. a game about forging connections, feelings, and lesbians with swords? yes, yes and yes!
my playgroup for Death in Space is interested in playing, but they also have another game they're working around. later in the year, i also got the expansion Advanced Lovers and Lesbians.
